What is Public Health?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines public health as the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles; researching disease and injury prevention; and detecting, preventing, and responding to infectious diseases.
Our purpose is to introduce high school students to public health and the vast array of professions. There are a multitude of public health professions such as community health workers, epidemiologists, first responders, nutritionists, public policymakers, occupational health and safety professionals, sanitarians, and many more.

Eligibility:
- Previous Public Health Camp participants are not eligible.
- Rising 11th and 12th grade students for the 2026-2027 year (starting August 2026) from school districts in Bexar County, Texas. Students from private, charter, and home school networks may apply; however they must attend a school that is in Bexar County.
- Reliable transportation required.
Important Notes:
- Online applications due on Thursday, April 30 11:59 PM CST. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Apply early, spaces are limited.
- Acceptance into Public Health Camp will depend on the virtual introduction meeting and your application.
Public Health Camp Selection Process:
- Students must complete and submit the application in full.
- Applications will be reviewed by the Public Health Camp team.
- Selected students will be notified of the next steps and invited to attend a mandatory orientation session.
- Students must attend the orientation before committing to the program.
- The final step is to complete and submit all required enrollment forms once officially invited to participate.
Your Commitment (If Selected):
- If selected, you must attend all five days of camp - June 22 - June 26, 2026.
- THE STUDENT MUST ATTEND MANDATORY ORIENTATION TO BE CONSIDERED FOR ENROLLEMENT.
- You will be responsible for ensuring your final capstone project is completed on time by the end of the week with you small group and the guidance of the Public Health Camp Team.
- Co-present your group's Capstone project at the IIMS Community Engagement Symposium (Nov. 7, 2026).
